When you’re going through a stressful or heartbreaking time with a pet, it can be really helpful to connect with other pet owners going through similar situations. Here you will find information about two different support groups for pet owners, Pet Loss groups and Pet Stress groups.
Pet Loss Support Groups
Because the loss of a pet can be such an overwhelming and isolating experience, attending a pet loss support group can be a helpful way to connect with others who understand the pain you are going through.
You may find a pet loss support group helpful when you are:
- Navigating decisions around end of life for your pet
- Experiencing the “anticipatory grief” of saying goodbye to them
- Dealing with wide array of emotions when they gone from your daily life
- Trying to find support and strategies to help you move through the pain and heartbreak
I facilitate the PAW’s Chicago HEAL (Helping Each Other Alleviate Loss) Support Group. The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 7-8pm at PAWS Adoption Center location and you can find more information about the group here. The group is free thanks to the generous support from Hinsdale Pet Memorial Services. RSVP to Brian Zeman at 773-687-4724 or email [email protected]
There are several Pet Loss Support Groups in the Chicagoland area, click on the links below for more information.

Pet Stress Support Groups
If you have a pet who has behavior issues that:
- Causes stress & a whole range of emotions for you
- Impacts your day to day life
- Affects your relationships with family and friends
- Leaves you feeling isolated and alone
Connecting with others who are going through a similar experience can be really helpful! I am not currently running a Chicago Pet Stress Support Group, but highly recommend the “Living with DINOS” online course as a way to connect with others going through the other things while learning new coping strategies!
If you are interested in an in-person group, check here on the DINOS page to see if there is a group near you!
If you would feel more comfortable with one-on-one support, here is more information about counseling for pet owners.
If you are struggling with the emotional roller coaster of caring for a pet with medical or aging special needs, Compassionate Veterinary Hospice has a “Caregiver Support Group” available, you can find more information about their group here.
I also do presentations and webinars on the impact on owners caring for a pet with behavior problems. If you are interested in scheduling a presentation, you can contact me.
You don’t have to go it alone. If you are dealing with the stress of caring for a special needs pet or the heartbreak of losing a pet, reach out for support. I’m here to help you navigate the supports available to you, contact me to schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation.
